In Middle-earth: Shadow of War, there are two types of currencies to earn that go towards a variety of uses. Mirian, the more common currency, is more varied in how it is used, while Gold, a rare currency, is used exclusively for Microtransactions and Loot Boxes.
This page will explain what these currencies are used for, and how to obtain them.
Mirian is symbolized by a large white icon, and is used for the following:
- Purchasing Gem Slots for Gear
- Upgrading Rare, Epic, or Legendary Gear
- Upgrading Fortress Defenses or Assault Bonuses (per Assault or Defense Leader)
- Purchasing Silver War Chests and Loot Chests
In order to find this currency continually and in good quantities, consider your options below:
In your travels, you will spot Orcs with white dots above their heads. These are Treasure Orcs, and they hold valuables. They cannot be seen on the main map, only on your minimap in the corner – and once killed, will drop small amounts of Mirian, or possibly a gem.
As you progress, you may even find Rare Treasure Orcs, enemies with orange dots above their heads. These grunts are still easily killed, but drop greater amounts of Mirian or better quality gems when killed.
All of the Main Quests, both essential and nonessential, will award you with the decent amount of Mirian upon completion. Since each of the major questlines also awards you a unique skill upgrade when the questline is completed, it’s worth your while to see them all through.
EditShadows of the Past Missions
As you learn more Skills in your Skill Tree, you’ll unlock memories of Celebrimbor’s glory days and take part in special challenges. Getting at least a bronze in these challenges by completing it will earn a decent amount of Mirian, with bigger rewards when you get to tougher regions.
You should also be sure to try and complete all bonus objectives so you can earn additional skill points and gems as well.
Once you have unlocked the Pit Fighting option in Act 2, you can send your own followers to fight other Captains – or each other, in the pit fights, and earn money if your side wins the battle. It is a bit risky, as you have a chance of losing a Captain you might be partial to, but the rewards are two-fold: You’re chosen follower will increase in level, and may even become Legendary, and you’ll earn more money the tougher the fight!
As you continue to defeat Orcs in Mordor and earn better and better gear, you’ll start to find that you have more gear than you know what to do with. Once you are sure you have no reason to go back to older gear, whether it be common, Rare, or even Epic – you can destroy the gear to get some Mirian back.
However, you should only destroy Rare and Epic Gear far after you have upgraded it by completing its associated challenge to level up the gear, and it becomes outclassed by newer gear. You should also never destroy Legendary Gear, as it can be upgraded multiple times – at level 20, 40, and finally 60 – making it useful all the way to end game. The only exception is duplicates, as they often have the exact same bonuses.
You can also destroy Followers in your Online Market to turn them into gear, and then turn that gear into Mirian – but only do this when your Followers are well below a level worth having.
While not the greatest way to make money, you can use the Overlord of the region’s affiliation to earn some extra coin.
If a member of the Marauder Triber currently holds a Fortress in a region, you can find tribute chests in the area that are overflowing with Mirian. If you get close, you can interact and loot the money for yourself!
Unlike Mirian, Gold is much harder to come by, and is only used for purchasing Microstransactions and Loot Boxes.
However, there are more ways to obtain Gold than by taking out your wallet – you can also get gold rewards for certain milestones and objectives.
Currently – there are three known cases where you can be rewarded with Gold:
- Complete a Daily or Community Challenge that lists Gold as a Reward (Example – A Daily Reward that tasks you to defeat a Drake in the Gorgoroth Region may reward you with 50 gold).
- Take over your first Fortress in an Online Conquest – Your first successful assault will reward you with a large sum of Gold – 500!
- Have your Fortress successfully repel another player in their Online Conquest – Once you take over a Fortress, the Overlord and Warchiefs you place in the Fortress, as well as the defenses, will be uploaded online to let players try and attack it. If your team of Orcs kill the player, you’ll be rewarded 50 Gold.
